Best WSOP tournament stories
The World Series of Poker is an important event for fans of the card game. Every year, something incredible and interesting happens. Here are a few interesting stories of this amazing event.
1. Carter Gill’s exit from the tournament
Getting knocked out of a WSOP event is not just a matter of losing. Sometimes all you need to do is break the rules of the casino where the games take place. Poker player Carter Gill had a fight with his girlfriend at the Rio Hotel where he was playing in a successful WSOP tournament. In a fit of emotion, Gill threw his girlfriend’s belongings out the window. He was banned from the hotel and the adjacent casino along with his aggressive behavior. So the poker player was not able to finish his game…
2. Funny outfit
Sometimes, you just need to show up in ridiculous clothes to prove yourself in a WSOP tournament. For example, Paul Pierce once played in a black hat with the logo of the town of Inglewood, where he is from, and a clover (a symbol of good luck). On the other side of his hat was a picture of Celtic president and coach Red Auerbach smoking a cigar. At the back of the hat was the number 34. On the brim of the hat were patches with green socks and Nike trainers. On his hand Pierce wore the championship ring he won in 2008.
3. The language barrier problem
There are a lot of foreigners coming to WSOP tournaments. Many of them play poker much better than they know English… Once a participant from Europe dropped a full house because instead of saying “fold” he said “no”. We had to call the tournament director, who ruled that the player had folded after all.
4. Poker players are getting younger
Over the past five years, WSOP tournament winners have gotten younger and younger. Players are now in the 21-25 age bracket for the Main Event.
5. Europe aims to conquer the WSOP
The world series of poker tournaments takes place in the USA, so it is not surprising that most of the poker players are Americans. However, every year more and more competitors from Europe seek to make a name for themselves at this incredible event. In 2011 the winner of the main event was Pius Heinz from Germany. Anton Makievsky, a player from Ukraine, also showed himself well in the event.
So, the World Series of Poker is a massive international event that always has something interesting going on. Long training on the slot machines and the ability to read the opponents helps poker players to do wonders at the gaming tables, which brings them tidy sums of money.
